A tire technician is responsible for the professional installation, maintenance, and repair of vehicle tires to ensure road safety and optimal performance. This hands-on role is common in automotive repair shops, tire retail stores, and dealerships.
Primary Job Duties
- Installation & Replacement: Removing old tires from wheels and mounting new ones using specialized tire-changing machines. This also includes installing valve stems and ensuring tires are seated correctly on rims.
- Balancing & Rotation: Using computerized spin balancers to eliminate vibrations by adding small weights to the wheel. Technicians also rotate tires to ensure even tread wear across all four tires, which extends their lifespan.
- Inspection & Diagnostics: Assessing tire health by checking tread depth, looking for sidewall damage, and identifying wear patterns that might indicate alignment issues.
- Repair Services: Fixing minor damages like punctures using plug-and-patch methods to save customers money and reduce waste.
- Wheel Alignment: Some technicians perform basic alignments, adjusting suspension components to ensure the vehicle travels straight and true.
- Customer Interaction: Discussing tire issues with customers, explaining repair options, and recommending the best tire types based on the vehicle's specific needs.
Physical and Working Conditions The role is physically demanding, often requiring the ability to:
- Lift Heavy Objects: Regularly lifting tires and wheels weighing between 50 and 75 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds for commercial vehicle tires.
- Stay Mobile: Spend long hours standing, crouching, or kneeling in a fast-paced workshop setting.
- Handle Elements: Work in various environments, including extreme heat, cold, or rainy weather, especially if providing roadside assistance.
Compensation: $17.00 - $25.00 per hour
